We need to rethink the "why" of investing. There's more to this than just gambling. Historically, we invested in companies to grow American industries and create American jobs. We backed companies that supported the American workers. As they grew, we all benefited - workers, management and investors.
Investing is like voting. When we buy shares of a company, we are telling the world: "I believe in this company". We want its share price to go up. But what if we used our investment dollars as a lever to boost companies that we like. If we all buy in, and take an active role - on social media, voting our shares, communicating with management - we can make change happen. Whether that change is simply elevating the community awareness of a company, highlighting their efforts for good, or we can make a difference. And that's powerful.
This is a direction I want to explore with my blog today and a new investing letter in 2021. If you want to join me on the ride, sign up for my blog. There, I will be writing about resources, ESG investing, and stocks.
I'll be putting out free investing content, both in my blog and with partner sites that want my commentary. I'll post links to the external stuff, but keep checking back here for new content on stocks, ESG investing and the bull market in metals...or sign up for my blog and I'll send it straight to you for free!
Raising children, I realize how important service is for all of us. We need to lend a hand and lift others up. Some day, we may be the ones that need an assist.
I want to shine a light on both businesses and non-profits that are doing good work in service of others. The short hand is ESG investing...but that doesn't really get it.
I'm advocating conscientious investing. And I'm always on the lookout for good works. Feel free to email me ideas at mattb@mattbadiali.net

I first encountered mangroves in the Florida Keys. They are odd plants that grow on stilts and weep salt from their leaves. But they anchor the entire marine community. Their roots create nurseries for fish, their limbs create nesting areas for sea birds and their forest protect the shoreline from storms.
The idea of anchoring a community has a strong appeal to me. The mantle of "expert" or "guru" never felt comfortable to me. I'd much rather interact in a group. I learned more from groups of people at conferences than I ever did doing research alone. We know the power of crowd sourcing. We all have some experiences that we can share...
And in investing that's critical.
Mangrove will combine that community with conscience. We will find great investments that reflect our core values.
In my perfect world, Wall Street is a source of capital for great ideas. instead of lottery tickets, we can invest in companies that improve our world - by creating jobs, improving health, advancing our understanding and contributing to society.
That's what Mangrove Investing is all about - building a community of investors who want to do "good" while they grow their wealth.
We can do both.
